The reading at our Father鈥檚 Day and Jersey Day Liturgy on Friday 3rd September was from St Paul鈥檚 Letter to Corinthians (1 Corinthians 13:4-6).

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others; it is not self-seeking. It is not easily angered; it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

I was struck how appropriate.

How appropriate this Jersey Day as we pray and celebrate the life of young Nathan Gremmo who was tragically killed in an accident in Year 8 in 2016 and through his father鈥檚 love has started the national conversation about organ and tissue donation.

How appropriate as we honour fathers and those in father roles in our life. Those who give and guide and care unconditionally.

How appropriate for our times when we need compassion and love and kindness and patience more than ever as we grapple with the implications of extended lockdown that COVID-19 brings.

More words would only dimmish those of St Paul.

To conclude, a word of thanks to Mr Wisemantel and Sport Convenors for the prizegiving presentations that have been held the last two weeks and congratulations to all students. We can celebrate that we did have substantial winter and summer competitions and look forward now to full programs in 2022 and I am hoping all students jump back into it wholeheartedly 鈥� we will be ready.

Thank you also to Mrs Garofano and her team who set up, monitored, and coordinated the Year 12 Trial Exams online. Students were a credit to themselves and their families. Our young men and women couldn鈥檛 have been better in effort and application and are models ready to face any challenge 鈥� grounded, aiming for the stars.

Finally, thank you to our parents who are stretched every day with work and supervision duties while keeping home and house together 鈥� a tremendous model of love in practice for your children. May you be blessed with good health.

As part of improvements for disability access to schools, the 缅北强奸 P&F Association secured funding as part of the NSW Community Building Partnership grant. This NSW Government grant has allowed us to improve our facilities, by building a pathway to Hermann Oval. 

The pathway begins alongside Lawrence Oval and ends at the main stairway. The retaining wall will also allow for additional seating. Instead of disposing of the soil from the hill offsite, Maintenance has moved this to the other side of the ovals, allowing a flattened area where we can store outdoor sporting equipment safely and which can be accessed more easily.

As we move from winter into spring, we are pleased to welcome a calf and two lambs to the 缅北强奸 Farm. They are settling in very well and are all in good health.

Our new additions will be included in our Agriculture and Show Team programs later in the year.

Mr Michael Hopkinson, Principal of St Agatha's Catholic Primary School in Pennant Hills, wanted to commemorate 200 years of Catholic education in Australia. His vision included making significant changes to the aesthetics of a large wall at St Agatha's school. To bring this vision to life, he commissioned our own Mrs Marie Hogan, Academic Head of Visual Arts to transform the 10m x 2.5m high wall into a legacy for this vibrant community that will last forever.

With a blank canvas to begin, Mrs Hogan spray painted a stunning mural. The mural features Mary McKillop Australia's first saint, Fr Tennyson Woods, and students of the past and 21st Century students learning and growing in the Catholic education system entwined with subtle, Australian themes throughout.

Mrs Hogan said that she was honoured to create something so special for Aggie's school community.

St Agatha's are thrilled with their showpiece work and look forward to welcoming staff and students back to enjoy this legacy.

So pleased to see our hardworking Principal, Br Steve Hogan fsc featured alongside other Principal's in the Hills Shire times sharing his tips with the broader community on distance learning.

Br Steve said:

This time is a wonderful opportunity to strengthen and rebuild family relationships and find comfort and security in what truly matters: love and kindness, home and family, health, and wellbeing.

And we must then live each moment of every day in confidence knowing what matters has not changed and that the tomorrow we seek, will come, and we will be much richer and wiser because of what we have learned and created in this extra time we have.

Reframe the situation, look at the lockdown not as adversity, but opportunity. An opportunity to use the extra time we have without normal routine, to do new things, explore, invent and delve into areas of interest.

• Maintain a routine each school day: breakfast, uniform, class at 8:35am until 3.15pm.
• Get involved in all the activities and competitions each week produced by the Mission Service Team, Lasallian Youth Ministers, the Sports Team, the Library Team including Read-to-Succeed initiatives, and the Deans, such as the MasterChef Challenge, top tricks
• Give yourself some screen-free time each day
• Stay active by enjoying the outdoors
• Keep in touch online with friends and family
• Do something you enjoy each day
• Be good, be kind, be loving: find ways for random acts of kindness for family members and friends. Reach out and check in on at least one mate each day, asking RUOK?

Quality sleep improves your mental, emotional, and physical performance. It also improves your immune system, balances your hormones, boosts your metabolism, and improves your brain function. Sleep is when your brain files or removes all the clutter that accumulates in a day of learning and thinking so you are refreshed and ready with energy for the next day.

Getting good sleep is important for both your mind and body.

How much Sleep do I Need?

Different people need a different amount of sleep in order to function optimally during the day. Whilst most adults need about 8 hours sleep a night, many teenagers need more like 9-10 hours sleep per night.

Working out how much sleep you need will take a little time and perseverance. Record how you feel during the day based on how much sleep you had a night and a pattern will start to appear.

Top Tips for getting to Sleep and a Sleep Routine

1. Have a regular bedtime and wake up time. A regular bedtime helps to set your body clock so your body knows it鈥檚 time to sleep. Waking up at (or near) the same time each day also helps your body to establish a sleep pattern. Get plenty of sunlight during the day too.
2. Establish a bedtime ritual. Doing a series of actions before bed also helps your body to prepare for sleep. Ideas include a warm bath or shower, reading a book, listening to quiet music or doing some gentle stretches.
3. Avoid technology in the hour before bed, including TV, computers and phones.
4. Exercise during the day so that your body is ready for rest at night.
5. Don鈥檛 eat big meals at night. Eat as early as possible and try to avoid rich, heavy food too late.
6. Limit your caffeine during the day and don鈥檛 drink any caffeine in the afternoon or evening.
7. Don鈥檛 have too much liquid in the evening.
8. Worrying about problems at school or with friends often stops you from getting to sleep. Talk to a trusted person about things that are worrying you to find ways to solve your problems. You could also try some relaxation exercises such as meditation or positive visualisation.
9. Have your room as dark as possible when trying to get to sleep. Use a sleep mask if you need to avoid light e.g. from electronic devices, street lights etc.

Staying Asleep

• Make sure the temperature of your room is comfortable. Too cold and you may have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. Too warm and the heat will also wake you.
• Having a quiet environment will help you stay asleep. If loud noises often wake you, having some consistent 鈥渨hite noise鈥� can be helpful. Earplugs may also work for some people.
• A comfortable bed that is large enough for you to spread out and is supportive will help you to sleep well, as will a comfortable pillow which provides support for your neck.
• Good ventilation in your room helps to get rid of toxins and keep the air you are breathing fresh. A potted plant in your room may help.
• Make sure you go to the toilet before bed.

Good Quality Sleep

• Smelling lavender while you sleep might improve the quality of your sleep. Try a few drops of lavender oil in your washing or on your pillow, or using lavender scented soap.
• Have a good sleep environment. Clear your room of clutter. Dust regularly. Have calming colours.
• Try rearranging your room according to Feng Shui principles, whereby you can see the door from your bed, but your bed is not directly facing the door.

Feeling Refreshed after Sleep

• First thing in the morning, drink a glass of water to help you wake up and rehydrate.
• Do some gentle stretches or more vigorous exercise first thing in the morning as part of your morning ritual. This will also help to set your body clock.
• Practice deep breathing while you are still in bed to make sure your body is able to take in lots of oxygen and expel carbon dioxide.

If you try out the tips here and are still having trouble with falling asleep or staying asleep, try talking to your doctor to see if there is a medical or other reason.

We are continuing with the online stationery provider Select Office National to assist with your basic stationery items. This is a very convenient way to prepare for the school year. The College also receives a 5% rebate on totals sales which is given to the 缅北强奸 Parent & Friends Committee, to assist with College projects.

As a minimum, all students will require:

• Grid book for Mathematics (A4 5mm Grid Binder Book)
• A4 lined paper (in book form for each subject, or in a folder)

During Terms Two and Three of 2021, some Year 7 students participated in a before-school reading initiative. The final session for the year was held this week and we decided that the theme for the lesson would be fancy dress!

One positive of the lockdown is possibly because of the reduction in industry and night lighting, never again in our lives will we be able to see such brilliant stars in Sydney. 

According to the Atlantic Newspaper: The Milky Way—our little corner of the observable universe has, for its part, some 400 billion stars. So! If we multiply the (estimated) average number of stars in each galaxy by the number of galaxies in the observable universe—and carry the billion, etc. — we get a rough estimate of ALL THE STARS we're capable of observing. There are roughly a septillion stars in the observable universe. That's 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars. Which is, for lack of a more fitting description ... a lot of stars. So, then: Back to you, you tiny little human, standing on the surface of your tiny little planet in your tiny little corner of the universe. How many of those septillion stars are actually visible to you? An extremely, yep, tiny little percentage. 

There are only about 5,000 stars visible to the naked, average, human eye, MinutePhysics points out. And, because the Earth itself gets in the way, you can only see about a half of those from where you stand. This means that, when you gaze into the heavens, full of wonderment and awe, you see around 2,500 stars scattering the sky. If you're lucky, that is, and the stars align. Over history, as more and more lights have been used, these project this light into the night sky and so like a torch in a lit room, its light does not stand out.

Year 7 are studying the moon in Science, and as part of this unit are looking at moon phases.

Students in 10.7 Science were given the task to make a model that best represents the structure of DNA, the molecule of life. This exercise was challenging in remote learning as normally we would give the students the materials and they would then design a model of DNA from this. 

A large part of Science is encouraging students to problem solve and as they say, necessity is the mother of invention. This was obvious as the students had to use the materials they could find to best communicate the key features of the DNA model. These features included the base pairing of Adenine with Thymine and Guanine with Cytosine; the shape of a twisted ladder known as the double helix and the placement of alternating phosphates and sugars along the side. We had lots of lollies, lego, pasta, paper towel rolls, even weights for bodybuilding. 

Students then had to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of their model in how it portrayed these features. 

But the winner had to be Connor Mamo. His model showed the double helix background, the twisting shape and the nitrogenous bases as the rungs of the ladder. Well done to all the boys.

These designs, whilst may look simple, are quite complex, and our Year 7 should be very proud of their achievements.

Together with the Music department, we are planning a songwriting competition which is open to all students! We are calling upon you and your amazing talents to compose a piece and throw your hat in the ring for a chance to: 

• Perform your piece for the entire College 
• Assist in creating the new College song 
• Professionally record your piece 

As well as further prizes later to be discussed! This is a great opportunity for all students to get involved in something new and exciting. You have the option to submit one piece for every section if you are feeling extra creative or just one! As well as the option to submit it as a group or individually.

A busy week for a number of 缅北强奸 alumni:

Mr Ben Quilty, Artist (Class of 1991) set an extraordinary goal to raise $1,000,000 for Afghan refugees attempting to flee. Commissioned in 2011 by the Australian War Memorial to follow the Australian Defence Force and tell the story of what was happening on the ground in Afghanistan, he is well placed to understand the complexities and necessities needed to assist. The NSW Swifts were crowned 2021 Suncorp Super Netball Champions on Saturday 28th August. What a fabulous season they have had despite the challenges they've faced. Special mention to Tayla Fraser (Class of 2017), Danielle Mace (Class of 2012) and super Coach/缅北强奸 parent Briony Akle who were integral in the team's success.

Mrs Ming Long (Dux, Class of 1988) has been insightful in her interviews for the 7.30 Report series on 'Why Women are Angry'. This series unpacks a number of topics of disadvantages women face in the pay gap, super and other issues.
