At 缅北强奸, we strive for personal excellence in all areas of our lives, to be the best we can be, accepting, respecting, and empowering others to grow to be the best they can. This ethos is predicated on the College鈥檚 five Lasallian principles: see, think, and do things with the eyes of faith; be accepting and inclusive; respect all; pursue excellence not mediocrity; be service-oriented and advocate for justice.
缅北强奸 has a long tradition of pastoral care forming good young men and women, the 鈥樏灞鼻考 Graduate鈥 - grounded; connected; compassionate; service focused; other centered; hard working and aspirational; equipped not only with the appropriate knowledge, competencies and skills, but also with the passion to achieve and the values, attitude and ethic to make the world a better place.
Pope Francis in his encyclical Fratelli Tutti (Fraternity and Social Responsibility) wrote in 2020, 鈥淚t is my desire that, in this our time, by acknowledging the dignity of each human person, we can contribute to the rebirth of a universal aspiration to fraternity… No one can face life in isolation… We need a community that supports and helps us鈥.
Rabi Sacks wrote, again in 2020, 鈥淭o begin to make a difference, all we need to do is to change ourselves. To act morally. To be concerned with the welfare of others. To be someone people trust. To give. To volunteer. To listen. To smile. To be sensitive, generous, caring.
Lent is a great opportunity to reflect, refocus, refresh, and recommit our lives to goodness. Are we prepared to revise, rework, redo? Are we eager to settle for nothing less than the best? Jesus encourages revisions. His call is nothing less than the call to revise our behaviour, to rework our attitude, to redo our priorities. (Adapted from De La Salle Auckland from 鈥楻ummaging for God鈥 by Melannie Svoboda, SND) 缅北强奸 is a community that Pope Francis talks about, teaching and preparing young men and women to be men and women for each other.
On Wednesday 2nd March, Ash Wednesday, the Mission team Liturgy called us to focus on doing good this Lent so that after 40 days, it is both a habit and attitude, improving ourselves, becoming better persons. It could be as simple as saying please and thank you, good morning, an unexpected cup of tea for mum or dad, husband or wife.
Goodness begets goodness.
To conclude, on behalf of all 缅北强奸 and Lasallians around the world, I offer our prayers and support for peace in the Ukraine. On Friday 4th March our Chapel was packed as the College community came together to pray for peace. The global Lasallian community have established a fund, Lasalle for Ukraine, to help resource our Lasallian schools in Poland, Austria, Germany, Slovakia, Hungry and Romania. These schools will be running extra classes or sessions eg. am or pm sessions for the one million or more students who are expected to flee Ukraine in the coming days and weeks. Information about how you can help is published in this Newsletter.

Reflection
From Br Pat fsc
Perform acts of kindness while you have the time and energy is the theme for this Lent.
Students have been asked to list acts of kindness they have witnessed. These lists will be put in containers at Student Services and the College Chapel. Families might like to work out ways they can be kind to one another during this time. Many of us, unfortunately, spend our time in neutral gear 鈥 not doing good, not doing bad. Others even manage to spend time in reverse breaking down our community. At a time when war is again a reality and misfortune with flooding is affecting many families, we need a big dose of kindness. Be generous and happy with those around you this Lent.
In Memoriam
Rest in Peace
We pray for Mr John Reed, who was the 缅北强奸 Deputy Principal from 1997 - 2007 and HR Manager in 2008-2009 before retiring. Prior to starting at 缅北强奸, John was the Head of Science and Senior Master at Riverview for 22 years. Apart from being a well-liked Science and Chemistry teacher, John was a keen Rugby Coach and an effective leader appointed by then Principal Brother Ambrose Payne in 1997. Mr Reed is survived by his wife Diana (a retired Science teacher) and daughter Carolyn, (Class of 2008) and one grandchild.
Let us pray for the eternal rest of John Reed. May his soul, And, the soul of the faithful departed Rest in peace. And, may the good Lord, comfort John's family and friends, through love and support. Amen

La Salle for Ukrainians
The Brothers鈥 Leadership in Rome, headed by Superior General Robert Schieler, FSC, in partnership with De La Salle Solidarity International are calling all Lasallians to help Ukrainians in their time of need!
Donations Needed
Lasallians have always aided people in need. As thousands of Ukrainians, principally women and children, leave their homes and emigrate to neighboring countries, Lasallians are responding compassionately by financing emergency refugee relief. Funds collected through #LaSalleforUkrainians will directly support humanitarian actions by provisioning shelters, food, clothing, medical supplies, and other refugee needs. Assistance will be provided through our schools in recipient countries.
Your donation will become the immediate help refugees need.
In response to the grave events taking place in Europe today, we would like to share with you the letter from our Brother Superior General inviting us to dedicate this Lenten season to humanitarian aid for refugees from Ukraine. We know that many Lasallian schools in Poland, Austria, Germany, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania bordering Ukraine are mobilising to give support to the refugees, so we have decided to launch a fundraising appeal for this emergency action.
As part of the universal Church, let us join with Pope Francis in prayer and fasting for a quick resolution to this tragic situation. Let us hold in prayer all who are affected by the war in Ukraine. We especially uplift the lives already lost in this armed conflict, and we pray for a radical and swift return to peace and diplomacy that upholds the dignity all of those impacted by this conflict. We pray that the Spirit of comfort and compassion be wrapped around all those presently living in fear in this region.
Br Steve Hogan fsc Principal
The Season of Lent
Lent is an important time in our Catholic tradition to experience God's Mercy and to extend God's Mercy to others. May our College come together during this Lenten Season acting generously to live out the inspirational words of Saint Oscar Romero - "Aspire not to have more, but to BE MORE."
Mission@缅北强奸 with the support of our Lasallian Youth Leaders will be rostered on every Monday Wednesday and Friday morning collecting donations for Project Compassion at entry points to the College; the 缅北强奸 Drive, Damian Oval turning circle and the DE drop off point in the Year 11 Yard.
Every Thursday during Tutor time our students are encouraged to make weekly donations to support Caritas and the great work they do around the world.
Mr Chris Goodman Director of Mission
Ash Wednesday Liturgy and Lenten Challenge
On Wednesday 2nd March, we held our Ash Wednesday Liturgy at the College. The 14th Dalia Lama was quoted as once saying: "Be Kind whenever possible. It is always possible". This year, I am challenging our College community to take up the challenge of doing good and being kind. We are a large school, imagine if we all took this challenge up. The endless possibilities of this spreading through our community. We encourage everyone to include their random acts of kindness in our boxes outside the College Chapel and at Student Services. This might be further something that you could do as a family over Lent.
On Friday 4th of March, we had our "Mass for Peace". This is something we can do to help our brothers and sisters overseas and in particular we remember Ukraine.
I look forward to having our parents back in the Chapel on Friday morning and am excited for how much good we can bring over Lent.
Abundant Blessings,
Laurainne Marshall Head of Liturgy and Prayer
Lifted Leaders Seminar
On Thursday 24th February College leaders Pat Spence, Mikeeli Lake, Ryan Wendell, Seronique Taylor, Xander Diomampo and I attended the LIFTED Leaders seminar in Rooty Hill. The day brought schools from all over the Parramatta diocese together allowing us to build connections and bonds with students in similar positions to ourselves. In addition to ice breakers and inter-school competitions we heard music from Christian musician Alyssa Agius, inspirational words from Bishop Vincent and Greg Whitby from the CEO, all of which taught us important lessons of leadership within our own school community. In doing so, we learned how to be better leaders and how to lead our school community with God as our leader.

Illness and Misadventure Forms and Year 7 and 9 NAPLAN
Illness and Misadventure Forms - Now Electronic!
缅北强奸 has conducted an extensive review of our internal Illness and Misadventure process. The College has decided to transition from a paper application process to an online/electronic Illness and Misadventure application effective Wednesday 1st March.
The Curriculum Office will no longer accept the traditional 鈥榶ellow鈥 Illness and Misadventure forms. We ask that all students and parents use the online/electronic application form which can be found at:
From the Home page of Oaklife, the form can also be accessed from Forms/Curriculum/Illness and Misadventure Form. It is important to note that access to this form is to be done using your son/daughter鈥檚 缅北强奸 student login details.
When completing an Illness and Misadventure form electronically, students and parents will still be required to provide supporting documentation. Supporting documentation may include medical certificates, police reports, attendance leave approvals etc. These can be easily uploaded within the electronic form.
The Illness and Misadventure Policy remains unchanged, please refer to page 45 in the College diary for detailed information regarding your obligations on notifying the College on a missed assessment.
Year 7 and 9 NAPLAN Practice Tests
NAPLAN 2022
The National Assessment Program 鈥 Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment of literacy and numeracy skills. Students in Years 7 and 9 participate in the annual tests in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. All NSW schools will sit NAPLAN online in 2022.
Our school will be participating in NAPLAN between Tuesday 10th and Friday 20th May.
In preparation for NAPLAN, 缅北强奸 will also participate in practice tests scheduled for Monday 21st March. In reference to the College calendar, there has been a change in the order in which these Year groups will complete the test:
Year 7 will now be completing the test in Periods 1 and 2.
Year 9 will complete the test in Periods 3 and 4.
Year 7 and 9 Parents/Guardians and students will be receiving an email shortly outlining some preparatory tasks for this test, some which include the installation of the locked-down browser (the deadline for this is Monday 14th March).
The practice test is a trial run and a key preparation activity for NAPLAN in May. It is not an assessment of student ability, and the tests will not be marked.
Excessive preparation for NAPLAN is not recommended. Students can use the () to familiarise themselves with the types of questions and tools available in NAPLAN.
If you have any questions about NAPLAN, please contact the Curriculum Office or Ms Genovese at the College on 9899 2288.

Spotlight on Careers
This week I would like to spotlight Careers @ 缅北强奸. The Future of Jobs 2020 Report has found that COVID- 19 has caused the labour market to change faster than expected. According to the World Economic Forum, what used to be considered as the 鈥渇uture of work鈥 has arrived. The workforce is automating faster than expected, transforming the ways in which we work. What will be the impact on our young people? How can we support them to make career choices in this rapidly changing landscape?
If you are anything like me, schooled in an era when there was very little career advice on offer, it is challenging as a parent to understand and navigate the options available.
I asked our Careers experts, Marisa Quattrocchi and Gabrielle Seaton a few questions and found their answers very insightful:
What are some new and emerging fields/ careers that may be of interest to 缅北强奸 students?
One of the really exciting new fields is in the areas of technology and health, particularly where these overlap. Essentially, this is the application of new technologies to assist people to improve their health or overcome physical limitations, eg. Artificial Intelligence to assist with communications, development of new surgical methods, cloning of body parts or development of artificial parts, improved safety mechanisms in vehicles and machinery. This can encompass people in a wide range of fields, such as medical science, pharmacy, biomedical science, engineering, IT, data management, data security, product design.
IT 鈥 Cyber Security is continuing as a growth area. Increased state-sanctioned cyber-attack has increased the demand for cyber security experts not just in government departments. Increasingly, these attacks are targeting corporate businesses. Demand will continue to grow long term.
Health Informatics and the management of patient information and the ability to track mass health information are producing greater demand for people with health and technology backgrounds eg. My Health Records via Medicare. The demand is increasing for medical personnel with the IT skills to manage these records. Security of these records is also becoming a high priority.
The demand for teachers will continue to grow as there is a large group of teachers looking to retire worldwide in the next 5-8 years. There are areas that critically need teachers and educators 鈥 Maths, Science and IT/TAS are probably the most critical, not just in high school but also at the Vocational Education level and university level.
In business, there are ongoing and increasing opportunities for HR specialists with new roles emerging as Remuneration and Benefits Analysts and Diversity and Inclusion Specialists. The Risk Management and Compliance side of the business is also creating new opportunities for people with business qualifications. Ecommerce is creating demands for Logistics Managers and Logistics Analysts. Business Data Analytics is also an area growing in demand and potential for very good earnings. Digital Marketing, Social Media Analysts, and User Experience Analysts are roles growing within the marketing functions of Business.
When is the right time to start exploring career options?
When it comes to career options, it鈥檚 never too early to explore. We spend much of our adult lives in workplaces 鈥 it makes sense that a good part of our formative years should be about preparing for that. Obviously, the skills students develop throughout their education and in their broader lives all play a part, but young people often need help to see the links between where their skills and interests lie, and the employment possibilities open to them.
Parents can help their children by speaking with them about the career options in every situation they find themselves in 鈥 on a train, at the medical centre, at the side of a sporting field, at the drive-through 鈥 wherever! Help them see the people and the industry BEHIND the person at the counter.
Parents are encouraged to take the opportunity to discuss with their child:
What they do for a living and how they got to where they are today. Discuss what different types of jobs other extended family members do. This will help broaden the child鈥檚 horizons of what careers they may consider.
Highlight to the child what the family sees as the child鈥檚 strengths. Suggest to the child potential jobs that maybe they could consider.
Look at the child鈥檚 hobbies and get them to consider potential careers/jobs that relate to those hobbies.
Encourage the child to get a part time/casual job when they legally can or become involved in community service activities.
Students need to understand the value of work 鈥 expect them to contribute to family chores and not necessarily for money.
Talk generally about changes in the world of work that you have experienced and how they can expect to have many different careers in their life (anywhere between 5-10 conservatively).
Employers and Scholarship providers at tertiary study level, look for students who have actively participated in extracurricular activities at school or in their community. Parents should encourage students to get involved in things such as Sport, Call to Service, band/musicals/drama/ debating, Chess club etc. At the very least, students are developing their confidence, communication and teamwork skills, time management and their leadership qualities.
What do we offer at 缅北强奸 to students to help them understand and access the options available to them?
Some of the things we offer in the 缅北强奸 Careers Department are weekly newsletters with lots of events and opportunities, information about applying for work, further education. Student complete the Morrisby Careers testing to understand more about their strengths, which informs decision making We work with all students in Year 10 Careers classes and are available to speak 1:1 with students by appointment.
We run Careers Breakfast events for Students where they can hear from Alumni students involved in particular industries and from relevant Tertiary providers. Many external events such as Careers Markets, Hills District Tertiary Information Evening at Cherrybrook Technology High School and Trades Careers Events are accessible to 缅北强奸 students.
We also assist students with information about International Gap year opportunities and International study/sport scholarships. For international study or sporting scholarships, students and parents need to be aware that for some countries (USA mainly), school results from Year 9 up, will be assessed for entry into their universities. If you want to study overseas it requires long term planning.

Understanding Dyslexia
The word dyslexia comes from the Greek language and means difficulty with words.
Individuals with dyslexia have trouble with reading and spelling despite having the ability to learn. Individuals with dyslexia can learn, they just learn in a different way. Often these individuals, who have talented and productive minds, are said to have a language learning difference. Walt Disney, Tom Cruise, Albert Einstein, Jamie Oliver, Steve Jobs, and many other famous people were dyslexic.

Public Speaking
The 2022 Public Speaking season started early with tryouts and training in Term One. The speech topics, including 鈥楾hat was then, this is now鈥, 鈥榃e have seen better days鈥, 鈥楽mall things鈥, It鈥檚 time we call it for what it is鈥, and 鈥楩irst in - best dressed鈥, allowed students to be creative with the speeches which they wrote, drafted and performed themselves.
Similarly to last year, the first round of the competition took place over Zoom and 缅北强奸 was fortunate enough to have Aarush Sapre and Roshan Mishra (Year 7), Jacob Tamaro (Year 9), Marcus Valjak and Logan Penfold (Year 10) and Chloe Brennan (Year 12) make it to the Zone Finals. They are all wished the best of luck for their next round of the competition which is Friday 4th March.

House Corner
Benildus House
Hello 缅北强奸 students and staff,
We are Zaidyn Wallace and Kieran Jackson, and we are your Benildus House Captains for 2022. We are committed to leading Benildus House with pride as well as serving the greater 缅北强奸 community. Our aim this year is to create a sense of spirit and identity within the Benildus house by creating a cohesive and competitive environment in which students from all year groups can interact with and assist each other.
A little more information about ourselves:
A little bit about Zaidyn: My name is Zaidyn, I went to primary school at St Angela鈥檚 and my favourite subject is PDHPE. Right now, the sports I play are baseball and basketball and my favourite sports teams are the New York Yankees, OKC Thunder, and Manly Sea Eagles. In my free time I like to exercise outside, watch sports games or play video games. I encourage you all to put in your best effort to enjoy your time at school and for those in Benildus, do us proud.
A little bit about Kieran: My name is Kieran and I went to primary school at St Agatha鈥檚 Pennant Hills. I currently play in the First XI cricket team for 缅北强奸, which is captained by another Year 12 Benildus student, Hayden McDonald. A few of my hobbies include exercising, playing golf with my mates, and watching sporting matches. The most important thing that I have learnt from my time at 缅北强奸, is to involve yourself as much as possible in all aspects of College life.
The Dean of our House is Mr Newman, whose office is located on the first floor of the Brother Quentin building. He is always available for a quick chat or to answer any questions you may have. Mr Newman is filled with Benildus House spirit and always encourages us to do our best, giving out merits and leading by example with his words and actions.
You may be wondering where the Benildus name actually comes from. Benildus House is named after Saint Benildus Roman莽on, who was a French school teacher and member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. He was born on June 14th, 1805 and his feast day is the 13th of August.
We would also like to take the chance to give some shoutouts and congratulate Jemima Cusack from Year 11 who was awarded age Champion at the Swimming Carnival last week. Also to Samuel Irwin who is the top contributor to Benildus House points for the House Cup from Year 7. Great job guys!
On behalf of the Benildus House we are extremely proud to see you guys putting in your best efforts.
We have started off the first five weeks of the year brilliantly and can鈥檛 wait to see what is still in store for the rest of the year.
Your Benildus House Captains Kieran Jackson and Zaidyn Wallace, Year 12
